How BCBA Recertification Works
Every two years, a BCBA must recertify and complete 32 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as part of the process.
According to official verification, the BACB charges USD 215 for BCBA recertification, in addition to the recurring cost of CEUs, which varies depending on how they are earned.
When choosing an ABA master’s program, it is natural to focus on comparing tuition and other academic factors. However, recertification is also important to consider because it is an ongoing requirement throughout a BCBA’s career, and its costs are not always clearly reflected in graduate program information.
How Many CEUs Does a BCBA Need?
Recertification is the process through which a BCBA must demonstrate every two years that they have maintained current continuing education and continue to meet the requirements necessary to keep their certification active.
Unlike initial certification, recertification does not require retaking the BCBA exam. Instead, the BACB requires BCBAs to document their continuing education through the 32 CEUs completed during the cycle and to meet their ethics and self-reporting obligations.
Self-reporting specifically includes answering questions related to professional circumstances, including those that could affect safe practice, as well as disciplinary measures and other official actions. At the end of the cycle, this information is submitted and formalized through the “recertification application”.
What Counts as a CEU, and Who Can Award One
Within each recertification cycle, and according to BACB requirements verified on September 9, 2026, a BCBA must complete a total of 32 CEUs. Within that total, some units apply to ethics, supervision activities, and other general continuing education.
Ethics CEUs
From March 2025, under the BACB’s current definition, the minimum is 4 CEUs and may also include training on cultural and contextual responsiveness. This type of content must be directly connected to behavior analysis and must be the primary focus of the activity.
Although the category expanded beyond content based solely on the BACB Ethics Code, this does not mean that any course related to culture or diversity can be counted as ethics CE. It must meet the specific criteria established by the BACB.
In addition, the same unit cannot count toward two categories at the same time. In other words, one CEU may be counted as either ethics or supervision, but not both.
Supervision CEUs
Under current requirements, a BCBA who has supervised RBTs, registered BCaBAs, or individuals accruing experience toward certification at any point during the cycle must complete 3 supervision CEUs at some point during the recertification cycle.
Supervision CEUs are not required for every BCBA. This requirement applies only when the professional takes on a supervisory role.
Beginning January 1, 2027, the minimum for this category will increase to 4 supervision CEUs without changing the overall requirement, which will remain 32.
General CEUs and Activity Types
The CEUs not allocated to the two categories above may be completed through continuing education related to different areas of behavior analysis. This means that BCBAs who do not supervise have 28 CEUs remaining, supervisors under the 2026 requirements have 25, and supervisors beginning under the 2027 requirements have 24.
It is also important to note that not all CEUs need to be obtained by purchasing courses. The BACB recognizes three ways to earn CEUs:
- Learning: Completing qualifying graduate-level coursework in behavior analysis and/or participating in continuing education activities recognized by the BACB.
- Teaching: Teaching a continuing education activity or university-level coursework in behavior analysis.
- Scholarship: Completing academic activities such as participating in manuscript peer review or publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
What Recertification Actually Costs
The recertification application for a BCBA costs USD 215 per two-year cycle. This figure was verified against the BACB’s official fee information as of September 9, 2026.
In addition to the recertification fee, there is a variable cost associated with how each professional completes their CEUs. Whether they are earned through course packages, events, conferences, or other activities, there is no single standard price for completing all 32 CEUs. For that reason, it is more useful to estimate this expense as a range rather than as an average.
Completing all 32 CEUs may cost approximately USD 149 to USD 540 per cycle, depending on whether a subscription or online package is used or whether the CEUs are obtained through a conference-based option.
Among the options reviewed, ABA CEU Network offered an annual subscription for USD 149 with enough access to complete 32 CEUs, Behavior University listed a 32-CEU package for USD 275, and an option based on the TxABA annual conference could reach approximately USD 540 when registration and CEU access were combined. Prices were verified on September 9, 2026.
If all 32 CEUs were earned exclusively through time-based Learning activities, they would equal approximately 26 hours and 40 minutes of instruction per cycle, because the BACB assigns 0.5 CEU for every 25 minutes. This does not include the additional time needed to record activities and retain the documentation supporting each CEU.
For someone evaluating the long-term cost of the profession, it can be useful to look at the same figure across several cycles:

These figures are arithmetic calculations based on current fees and prices, not projections of what maintaining certification will cost 10 or 20 years from now.
Actual out-of-pocket costs may also be lower than purchasing all CEUs separately. Some employers may offer professional development budgets, reimbursements, or memberships. These conditions vary and should be considered as part of a compensation package rather than assumed to be included.
The Recertification Timeline
BCBA recertification is not based on one general calendar shared by everyone. Instead, each BCBA follows a two-year cycle with individual dates based on when they initially earned BCBA certification or most recently recertified. According to the current BCBA Handbook, the recertification application becomes available 45 days before the recertification date. If the process is completed after that period, the certificant risks inactive status, interruption of certification, and additional late fees.
One important point about CEUs is that they belong only to the cycle in which they were earned. Completing the application before the deadline does not allow the next cycle to begin early, and CEUs earned beyond the required amount cannot be carried over to the next cycle.

The BACB indicates that professionals should retain a copy of their application and all supporting documentation for their own records, follow-up, and future applications.
Supporting documentation primarily records the CEU activity and may include the type of activity, certificates issued by an ACE Provider, syllabi and transcripts from university courses, documentation of teaching activities, or evidence of publications and academic reviews. If an entry is audited and the documentation does not meet the applicable requirements, the certification may expire.
What Happens If a BCBA Misses the CEU Deadline
When a BCBA reaches the recertification date without submitting the application or meeting the corresponding requirements, the certification becomes inactive. From that point forward, the individual may not bill, practice, supervise, or represent themselves professionally as a BCBA.
If, however, a BCBA completed all required CEUs before the recertification date but did not submit the application on time, there is a brief 30-day reinstatement period during which the individual may submit the application, pay the USD 50 late fee, and restore the certification.
This period cannot be used to complete missing CEUs or CEUs earned after the cycle ended. It does not function as an extension for that purpose. In fact, the BACB explicitly states that CEUs missing at the end of the cycle cannot be made up during the reinstatement period.
If the 30 days pass without the application being submitted, the certification expires and the individual loses the opportunity for late recertification. The person must apply for certification again and meet the requirements in effect at that time.
For longer lapses, the BACB offers the Qualification for Examination via Past Certification option for individuals whose certification expired within the previous five years. This pathway may allow the individual to qualify for the examination again, but among other requirements, it requires retaking the exam and earning 16 CEUs for each year that has passed since the certification expired.
Why This Matters Before You Pick a Program
When someone is just beginning to compare master’s programs, tuition figures and other academic factors, recertification requirements can seem distant and unimportant. However, some of the consequences of overlooking them appear even before certification is earned.
One of these is fieldwork supervision. BCBAs who supervise future certificants must remain qualified to do so, which includes meeting the ongoing supervision CEU requirements. For this reason, when evaluating a program, it is important to consider not only whether it offers fieldwork hours, but also who is eligible to provide supervision and whether those supervisors meet current BACB requirements.
Another consideration is employment. An employer may offer a CEU budget, in-house training, conference reimbursement, or other forms of support. It is worth asking about these benefits during a job interview because they are not universal and may be unfamiliar to professionals who are just beginning their careers as BCBAs.
Finally, a BCBA career involves specific costs at each stage. These include graduate education, tuition, certification, and eventually recertification. These recurring expenses, particularly the latter, deserve the same consideration as the others. For that reason, when comparing ABA programs, it is useful to consider not only certification itself but also the resources and benefits available to help maintain it.
How the 2027 Requirement Changes Affect Recertification
Beginning January 1, 2027, BCBAs who perform supervisory roles will be required to complete 4 supervision CEUs per recertification cycle. That is one more than the current requirement. The total CEU requirement will remain 32.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do BCBAs Have to Retake the Exam to Recertify?
No. Recertification does not require taking the BCBA exam again. Instead, the certificant must complete the required CEUs within the two-year cycle, remain in compliance with ethics and self-reporting requirements, and submit the application on time.
Can I Use CEUs Earned Before My Current Cycle or Carry Extra CEUs Into the Next Cycle?
No. The BACB explicitly requires CEUs to be earned during the applicable cycle, and any CEUs beyond the minimum requirement cannot be carried over into a future cycle.
Do I Need Supervision CEUs If I Do Not Supervise Anyone?
No. This requirement applies only to BCBAs who supervise registered RBTs or BCaBAs, or a trainee who is accruing experience toward certification, at any point during the cycle.
Can All 32 CEUs Be Earned Online?
Yes. For example, Learning CE events may be offered online as well as in person. The BACB permits these types of events as long as they meet the applicable requirements. It is also important to verify that the provider is active in the ACE Provider Verification Registry.
Do Employers Pay for BCBA CEUs?
Not all employers do. It depends on the organization. Some organizations offer in-house CEUs for professional development, conference reimbursement, or paid training time. However, these benefits are not part of BACB requirements and are not guaranteed. It is worth asking about them when considering a job offer.
Does My State License Have Separate Continuing Education Requirements?
In many states, yes. State licensure and BACB certification are separate obligations with different requirements. A BCBA may need to meet additional requirements depending on the license requirements in their state.

You should retain any documentation that supports and can verify each CEU, including the activity completed and its ethics or supervision category.
